Ryan founded Darwin Legal because he saw a gap. Early-stage tech startups are too small to hire in-house counsel, so founders either ignore legal issues, handle them without help, or pay hourly rates that make them afraid to pick up the phone. None of those options build the kind of relationship Ryan wanted to have with his clients.

So he structured Darwin differently; a subscription model gives clients cost certainty and encourages them to reach out without wondering if they may be hit with an unexpected bill. Ryan also deliberately limits his client count so he can stay close enough to each company to spot issues before they become problems.
